Japanese Maple winter damage branches - tricks to minimize?

Wayne Reibold

Every winter I get some dieback on some branches of my Japanese Maples (I have lots of Japanese Maples). Some get more dieback than others. I'm in a suburb of Seattle/Tacoma WA. Last late summer/fall I put a layer of compost around the root area of most of the Japanese Maples (avoiding getting really close to trunk) which I read was a good idea. We had a really harsh winter with way more snow and low temps (e.g., 8 degrees) than "normal"; I still see dieback so unclear if would have been worse if I hadn't applied the compost.

Anyone else have suggestions to minimize winter dieback on Japanese Maples?
