Brussels sprouts

Hello fellow gardeners,
I'm new here. Hope I'm in the right place! I live in San Francisco, not sure if that's considered PNW.

I have a small plot in a community garden, and I'm looking for some advice on what varieties of brussels sprouts grow well here.

thanx!

RE: Brussels sprouts

You will probably find more pertinent info in the California Gardening forum.......you are not exactly considered part of the PNW :-)

You may want to keep in mind that sprouts are considered a cool season crop. They need to be planted and mature before warm weather sets in, otherwise they bolt and flower before the sprouts form properly. Personally, I recommend them for fall planting rather than spring planting, as they taste best once they've experienced a frost or two.

If local nurseries have starts on offer now, anything they sell should be good for your area but don't hesitate to plant ASAP. Although it doesn't get all that hot in SF in summer, sprouts really do dislike heat of any kind.
