Japanese Maple- 'Osakazuki' cutting

5 years ago I bought a Japanese Maple- 'Osakazuki' "twig" for my garden. I say twig as it was very small ;-) A year or so ago I began having problems with it and discovered there was a mole trail right below it. I replanted it in a pot and it seems to be very happy.

A branch broke off. I tried to see if I could mend it, but it didn't take. I had left it attached at least a week, maybe more.. then took it and put it in a glass of water in my kitchen greenhouse window, after recutting the end.

It did nothing for a week and then all of a sudden I am getting great growth of leaves, better than outside ;-) because of warmth. My question is, will I be able to get enough roots on this branch to plant it as it's own separate tree, or am I being totally naive?
