There is a very wide range of prices when it comes to hostas, primarily because newer introductions (especially those with dramatic and fancy variegation or other unique features) demand a high price with hosta collectors. And some very popular selections are much slower to develop and create an impressive presentation and tend to cost more. But if you are going with standard varieties, a 1G pot shouldn't run much more than $9-12. And you can often find them for less.....like my local Safeway offering them for $5.99!

When comparing prices, be sure you are comparing comparably sized plants as well cultivars. Mail order sources can be a great source, but are often much smaller plants that are what are offered on the nursery tables. I buy frequently from Naylor Creek -- IMO, they have one of the best hosta selections available anywhere and their quality is topnotch. Never any trace of hosta virus. And since they are local, they are frequently present at the NW plant sales and shows.

Don't forget the local GW plant swaps and twice-yearly Green Elephant tailgate swaps offered on our sister site, Pacific Northwest Garden Exchange. You can often find hostas that way, altho they're generally older cultivars. You might also post a WANTED ad on Craiglist, probably under Farm & Garden - you never know what bargain you might find.

Check the hosta forum here on Garden Web, they mention mail order sources often and I believe they have an exchange. Many of them are really into the new and expensive but not all.

I see how the price varies, so I need to make sure I compare apples with apples, so to speak.
