Overwintering bulb onions

I'm not sure I've got all this straight, so please correct any of my false assumptions.

I'm going to try growing bulb onions from seed. For some reason, they seem more complicated than other veggies. Or, maybe it's just my ADD.

I understand the long-day/short-day thing for types to sow in spring.

But I was reading a piece from OSU, and they said onions can be sown in fall, overwintered (above 20úF), and grown on in spring.

Now, for doing this specifically, would you still use long-day onions or short-day onions?

This is just a 4x4' bed, a small experiment.

And if you know for dead-certain-sure that it won't work in the Oly area, just say so. (Every day is a new learning experience!)
