moving magnolia dianica (michelia yunnanensis)

(OK, I know it sounds like I do nothing but move established plants from one place to another, but...)
I have a smallish (4'x4') magnolia that I popped into the ground in my "storage" area about 16 months ago, figuring I'd move it when I found the right spot for it. It's healthy, and just finished blooming. Recently, I've been told that magnolias do not respond well to being moved.
Well, tough -- move it must. Any ideas about how to make this a successful move? Time is not of the essence here, so I can wait until fall, or even winter, if that would ensure/promote success.
Thanks, as always, for your helpful & instructive comments.
