I have 2 huge Cherry trees that also look like they got a frost or something. They appear to be recovering but they have lots of blackened leaves and even many apparently healthy leaves have fallen. They have put out new leaves in the past 2 weeks or so but I wonder what happened ot it.

This is our first year in this house so I had no way to know if this was normal for these trees.

I have several cherries. One very tall trunk (35')of a multi-trunked tree died almost overnight, from the tip to about halfway down. I'm mystified.

This happened at my sister's place as well. Two of her trees got hit.

So this is all recent and without precedent? Hmm, some sort of verticillium for cherry trees?

Hardly without precedent. Cherry trees are so prone to such problems Cooperative Extension put together the booklet 'Why Cherry Trees Die'. It may still be available.

Possible from several different diseases that afflict cherries. Your tree might not be dead, just the leaves and some twigs are.

In any event, look for information about bacterial blight which is the early stage of bacterial canker.

I've lost several of them, and I just replant and enjoy them while they last.

Thanks Ron and Firevicar. I did find the publication the other day and was going to purchase it, but they have a $5 minimum purchase.

John, do you just plant them in the same spot? How long do they last for you doing it this way? I know from reading about verticillium wilt that the fugus is in the ground and will just infect the next tree.
