Sudden Death of Cherry Tree

SeniorBalloon

We have a dwarf Lapins Cherry. Or I should say had. This would have been it's third year in the ground. It was about 15 feet tall. We recently went away for 3 weeks from Apr 28 to May 19th. When we left it was healthy, leafing out with a few remaining blosoms hanging on. We were looking forward to a few cherries this year. When we came back it was dead. Every new leaf node is blackened and it looks llike it received a severe frost, but we were told by our house sitter that it didn't freeze while we were gone.

What killed the cherry tree?

Thanks,

jb
