There are too many to go by this description.

Instead of a rhody, perhaps one of the rowdy orange deciduous Exbury azaleas?

My Medusa is blooming right now. Just started looking bedraggled the last day or two from the rain though.

We've been getting this same question at the nursery daily for the last 2-3 weeks. Happens every year at this time when the deciduous azaleas bloom :-) Suspect that what you are seeing is really one of them, most likely the Exbury hybrid 'Gibraltar', which is as about an intense an orange as can be found. Much more orange in color than any rhody I'm aware of.
