water fountain...

I am hoping that someone can help out on getting water fountain. One that makes nice sound and is visually pleasing. The kind that you buy in a store ready to go.Need something low maintenance, something that needs no water to be added daily, with a good pump system. Was thinking of something like a natural stone so it needs not much cleaning. Its going to be outside and have some protection.I would prefer not to have to remove the pump for the winter time.Mild coastal winters.
What should we ask for when selecting one?
Any help would be great.Thanks

You want a quality magnetic drive pump like Pondmaster or Supreme. Not a el cheapo Little Giant or Beckett. They wear out fast. Mag drives use less electricity and are more reliable.

Thanks Buyorsell: So should I buy the pump and fountain separately? I thought they come together? Anyways thanks for the tip I shall keep it in mind when looking.

It depends on where you buy it. Some are sold separately and some together.

I don't know where you are but Hughes Water Gardens in Tualatin has an excellent selection.

New to having a water fountain . We have two fountains, both outdoor. One large 3 teir and the other a smaller one. The larger I etimate to be about a 75 gallons.

When they installed it they told us to put in 2 capfuls of both Fountec and Protec...we'v noticed though during this first week the water in the large fountain looks green. I am cleaning the larger fountain today and don't know if I'm putting in too much of both chemicals.

I'd love to post photos of the fountains on this site so you can better understand my concerns. If that is possible pls tell me how.

All suggestions and information would be appreciated.

Every time you clean it you are going to restart the cycle that it needs to go through to get rid of the green algae bloom.

To post pictures they need to already be on a website that allows linking such as Photobucket. There is a code below each photo there that you copy and paste here to show the photo here.

OR you can manually type in the HTML code which is what I do.

(img src=paste the photo URL here) You need to use < and > instead of the parenthesis.

My DH bought me a fountain for Christmas last year. Of course, I didn't hook it up until warm weather arrived and when we did, it leaked! And the pump was difficult to start -- it was a pain. It came from Rona. I just tell you this, so that if you buy one at this time of year, make sure you have a guarantee that will take it through the start up concerns that MIGHT show up next year.

Portland Nursery had quite a few the last time I was there.

If Hughes Water Gardens has them, I'd do business with them. That's where I go for various pond supplies.

Unfortunately, we live in a world where entropy prevails. Whatever can go wrong will go wrong. I have a $45 Pondmaster pump I used briefly in an indoor aquaponics system, but it was too strong for my siphon so I started using a $10 Harbor Freight pump instead. After 10 months it stopped working, probably from being clogged with fish wastes. I then started using my Pondmaster again and it stopped working almost immediately. I just found the instructions and will take the filter out and clean it, etc, to see if I can get it working again. So I could just keep replacing the cheap Harbor Freight pumps...

As for the algae, the link is an article on using barley grass and lavender to keep ponds clear.

Photobucket which I use has seemed to change it's formatting. I used to just be able to copy the html code from below the photo but it won't seem to copy anymore so I have to click on share to get the code in a format where I can copy it.

Here is a link that might be useful: barley
