I have done this several times with success. In October, cut some pieces off the inflorescence and lay them outdoors on top of pots containing pure peat moss (I just use little 4" pots but whatever floats your boat). Over winter the parts of the inflorescense other than the seed left on the soil surface will decompose and in April or so the seed will germinate. This method gives the seed a period of cold stratification while enabling germination inhibitors to be leached off by the rain that falls all winter. Usually you can get some seed to germinate by sowing it without stratification but you will get a much better germination rate this way. The seeds can also tolerate frost but not the little seedlings once they have sprouted. Perhaps the seed are ripe before October but as outdoor stratification seems to work best, there is no point in collecting them earlier than that. As the seedlings grow up they can be potted on in June or so but I would recommend sticking with peat as a soil medium, until you have a chance to pot them on again when the weather is cool (perhaps the following spring). My guess would be you may need someplace to give the seedlings some protection over 1st winter, i.e. cold frame. With the large amount of seed produced, maybe try some fresh and later more as Ian describes.
