collapsing clerodendrums

This is the second tree to have done this here - grow for a couple years as the picture of health, then suddenly completely collapsing as from a lack of water, which hasn't happened. This was noticeable on a single branch first this time, then evenly affecting the whole tree. Any ideas?, This particular site, the same sucessively for both trees, has a healthy underplanting of mahonia, daphne, kerria - nobody shows any signs of stress. No burn - the clerodendrums just go limp.
Any ideas?
