Which bottlebrush species? A friend has a similar one, I'd like to know what your calling yours.

Hi Ron. It is similar to subulatus, but seems to get larger, and has flowers that are more pinkish than crimson. I suppose environment might affect flower color. Ian Barklay calls it Callistemon 'Hot Pink' and has seed. It produced quite a few volunteers one year after a heavy pruning, and the one I still have has remained true to the parent, so I believe it's the species not a hybrid or of garden origin.

Whatever it is, I would be happy to take cuttings, though I have heard cuttings of Callistemon tend to be floppy and less upright, but who knows.

I think I've thought the friend's shrub was C. subulatus also, but don't remember now. If they have it at the Seattle arboretum (as stated in article from 2009 linked to below) that gives me a live planting to compare with.

Great article. It's great to see so many Callistemon species come through some relatively cold winters. From searching the web, I found that Callistemon subulatus usually went to one meter, and this goes for Australian sites talking about native flora. Still, flowers and leaves look very close, and although the top of my plant (bottom of hummingbird feeder) is above 7', I think that had a lot to do with my pruning efforts.

Here is a pic I just took of that Callistemon. Should show how much of the stamens have emerged since Sunday (similar angle above). Just a little heat goes a long way. Also, this is my cell phone, since my camera is in Bellevue, so excuse the poor quality.
