On the other hand, first week of June I decided one melianthus that had been the focal point of a large container was really dead, had a chance to be in Seattle at Wells and bought something else. When I pulled the contents last week from the perennial pot to separate/replant, I found two wimpy looking sprouts on the melianthus rootball, not yet above the soil line. Not much of a showing for a 6-7 yr old plant, but not entirely dead either...I'd been using a saw to divide and not gently :(

I looked up your melanthius and it looks really interesting...Hopefully, you can pop it in somewhere where it doesn't show too much and next year it will be lovely again. I guess that's the second part of waiting...as soon as you give up and buy a replacement, the original springs to life. Actually, I'm quite thrilled about the paulownia -- it's in a place where it doesn't matter how long it takes to rebound.

The larger of my Arbutus 'Marina' has a six inch shoot coming up. I gave up on the smaller and dug it up. No shoots, but some healthy looking roots. I've replanted it in my nursery bed. It may still come back (just in time to be killed off next winter).

Yes! My passion vine lost all it's leaves and died off, which it has NEVER done. I thought it was dead. Just last week there was a sprout! A few more since, but it taking it's sweet time LOL I was SO pleased. Same for a pestemon.

On contrast, as neighbor gave me a tiny cutting of her butterfly plant which I planted in the ground just before winter. That little sprout survived being encased and covered through the whole snow storm and is doing nicely.
