My neighbor has a large old dogwood tree whose leaves are turning brown and falling off in very large numbers. What would cause this?

Dogwood leaf spot and twig blight, pretty bad on some Cornus nuttallii this time.

Thanks Bboy. Is this a fatal malady?
The ground is thick with the shed leaves, do they carry the disease? Will other plants get it?

I know of one of some size that was going to be cut down recently because one of the owners was tired of the fallen leaves.

So it can be indirectly fatal.

Here is a link that might be useful: Dogwood (Cornus sp.)-Anthracnose

I planted a Cornus kousa under a large Cornus nuttallii with anthracnose. The kousa came down with a case of it. Not real bad, but bad enough. I cut down the cornus nuttallii and the anthracnose on the kousa went away the following year.
One cornus nuttallii I have has it bad again this year. I think it's time to take it down. Kousas are planted in the area. Lots of them.
