is it too late for pumpkins from seed?

The kids have a spot where they want to plant pumpkins. Probably we would go for one of the small varieties. I don't think I've ever grown pumpkins before (plenty of other things but not a lot of gourd family), when do we direct sow them in Tacoma and will they mature before Halloween?

If they are made aware the result may not be a big orange pumpkin by 30 October, there is still time for pumpkin vines to form, bloom, and make something carve-able.

Oh that's a good point, thanks. I forgot that not trying to store them means ripeness is more optional.
