Alder trees dropping leaves?

jwestbury

I cannot remember, in my twenty-five years of life (all here in the northwest), having seen a summer this cold, cloudy, and windy. (Up here in Bellingham, it's actually been drier than normal, curiously.) I also can't remember seeing leaves all over the ground like this, and my mother, also from the northwest her entire life, can't recall seeing the ground littered with leaves so early.

Yet, I'm kicking up leaves on the road as I drive by like it's early October -- they're green leaves, but there are enough of them that the road looks like we're entering autumn already.

What's the deal? Is it the wind? I was under the impression that these trees were photoperiodic -- was I wrong?
