Blue Poppy Seedlings ? & Papaver Somniferum Pics

OK! I have Blue Himaalayan seedlings again. They are in a perfect spot. A truly shaded place that gets misted by sprinklers. I will actually probably plant them here if they live. These are the one thing I have never been able to grow out. I don't want to lose them...... Any advice?

Also, I have Papaver Somniferum growing and blooming everywhere right now! I threw out all kinds of different seeds everywhere last Fall and they turned out to be so pretty. This pic is from seeds I grew out of huge, dried pods I got at Pikes Place Market. (Papaver Giganteum?) They are over 8 feet tall! Purple ones and white. As I carried the big, dried bouquet around the market, and even on the ferry back home (last summer) I got teased a lot. Everyone asking me, "Whatchya gonna do with those?" I was with my mother-in-law too. (Nice) Anyway, what is really the deal for growing these?

Keep in mind that I'm only about 20 minutes from the ocean and we have that definite marine influence along with more clouds than you would find inland, but -

I don't find meconopsis do well in full shade at all. Lots of organic material in the soil, water in our dry months, but m. betonicifolia morning sun or dappled sun, m grandis in almost full sun here. Both have been reliably perennial.

Are your seedlings out of the seed pots and potted up individually? While high in organic content, my soil is also clay based and seedlings can be a little slow to start. I pot mine up into individual containers in May or June (this year it was end of June) and either plant them out in Fall or the following Spring when they have had some time to develop stronger roots.

The deal is that these are in fact illegal but remain very common in gardens here. You can also purchase started plants in garden centers. It seems you are unlikely to attract attention of law enforcement unless you establish what looks to be a crop planting (a big solid block of them, or long rows in a field).

poppy love

pnwgrdngirl --
if you're near the pdx/vancouver area, or if you're ever coming through, you're welcome to some of my poppy seeds once the seed pods are ready.

also some standard red opium poppies and a few others.
i'd love to try some seeds of your 8 ft. tall poppies. wow!
i had a foxglove that topped 8 ft. this year and i was beyond thrilled.

does anyone know whether poppy seeds stay true to the original plant or if they cross-pollinate with other poppies nearby?

They do cross pollinate freely. We saved all the seeds from Laurens Grape only one year, growing maybe 25' from other poppies, and got a wild mix of colors that included a few Lauren ;)

kcannard - your poppies are very pretty. I would love to trade seeds with you. I actually have pods left from the Market that I could send you. The ones I have planted will have cross-pollinated with the other ones I have out there. Will they still be huge even though they have cross-pollinated? You can keep seeds true if you put cheesecloth on the flower. Maybe somebody can explain this for us better. My Foxgloves were very tall this year too. The white one in the background of the 1st pic was over 8 ft tall!

Lauren - Thanks for the Meconopsis link. It helps a lot. Will move the seedlings slowly to dappled sun.
Lauren's Grape is probably my favorite poppy so far! I also really like Drama Queen.

bboy - I don't have fields of these mass planted. I don't think I will attract any attention. We live on the end of a cul-de-sac with neighbors very far away. I have seen businesses on Vashon with beautiful Opium Poppies in their planters. I also bought Lauren's Grape starts last year at our Farmer's Market.

I got three nice, big White Himalayan Poppy plants at our local nursery for $1.50 each yesterday! They were on the clearance table. To say the least it was a very great find. They were out of the blue ones. My blue seedlings are thriving and I hope they make it! Now I have to find the other colored ones. I would really like to find some lavender ones.

Seeds sources for these are very scarce, where do you guys find yours?

I have some poppies growing in my garden. They must've been in a seed mix because I don't remember planting them specifically. I scored the seed pods to see if stuff would ooze out. But nothing did. Don't worry; I'm not about to take drugs; I was just curious. The seed pods were still green and I don't know if they are papaver somniferum species.

Oriental poppies have hairy foliage and pods, the somniferum (which I have heard called lettuce poppies on occasion because of the white sap) have crisp, smooth, grey-blue foliage which is smooth as are their pods.

One of the flower vendors at our farmer's market grew fields of the somniferum until he was asked by the DEA not to do so, but you probably won't attract unwanted attention if you don't grow a field of them.

My m. Hensol Violet seeds (18 months old now but haven't bloomed) came from Chilterns - I buy most of my perennial seeds from them, or from Plant World of Devon (plant-world-seeds.com) if not Chilterns....great germination rates from both

I'm visiting down in OR and found some beautiful plants. Larsen's Nursery in Stafford on Stafford Rd. has Meconopsis betonicifolia in blue and the Hensol. I got four plants, two of each. Each plant has at least four clumps. $6.99 a plant. Also, thank you for the seed links. Would like to try some other kinds. I have lots of 'edge of forest ' that these will be so great in.
