I am dealing with a similar problem having just cut down a large Arbutus (very sadly, virus I suspect) and also having in place a very large fir stump. Thse two stumps are virtually entwined. Cannot afford to have them pulled out.) Having mulled this over, am planning to plant (in my sandy soil) either a Pyrus "Chanticleer) or a Robinia "Frisia" in that location. Don't know if that helps!

I really think you should seriously reconsider those two choices!

The main thing particular to planting near stumps is the possibility of Armillaria growing out from the stumps to kill new plantings later. Otherwise, it does not make much difference that there is a stump near - the planting will be affected by the condition of the soil, the light exposure etc. same as if the stump was not there.

Thanks so much. The trees sound like great choices. bboy, I did some research on Armillaria. It explains so many problems we've had planting near a different stump. We've lost four lilacs in the last couple of years, and now I know why!
