Bigleaf magnolia you could probably manage if there is no wind reaching the planting site in summer that would tear the immense, papery leaves of this tree. The others are not hardy except for Sprenger's magnolia, which might do for you also.

Or you could plant a 'Galaxy' instead. It is a better bet for most situations, the flowers of the Sprenger magnolia (as represented by pink forms in cultivation such as 'Diva') being extraordinarily fragile, their tepals tossing about wildly in breezes and tearing completely off in anything more forceful.

First I was surprised to find out that quite afew sites 'peg' M. macrophylla at Zone 5! You can see that here:

Second I read in Mr. Gardiner's excellent book, Magnolias, that there is a report of M. sprengeri having survived -23C while growing in the Michigan area.

What is your opinion of Magnolia x Vulcan? It is a hybrid of M. campbelli and M. lilliflora.

In cool climates like Britain (and my back yard) flowers may be of poor coloring. However, I have seen reddish blooms on other local specimens.

Being half 'Lanarth' Campbell magnolia - about the most tender expression of a not terribly hardy species - I would not expect it to be a good item for Michigan.

Maybe try 'Susan' instead, while not as reddish it does tend to produce noticeably richly colored flowers.
