sweet gum and falling branches

One of my neighbors has a huge sweet gum tree which lost 3 or 4 large branches in the last month. The tree looks perfectly healthy but the branches just break at their base. The spot in the tree where the branch breaks is black.

He told me that he spoke with an arborist and apparently sweet gum has two types of branches, v- and u-shaped. The v-shaped branches are weaker and can break.

Is this true? Could it be because of the heat? He claims that the tree is not sick. The tree is on their property but the branches hang above a very well traveled sidewalk so I'm concerned that there'll be more of them falling soon.
