Untidy Alysium

I always remember alysium as low growing, densely flowered plants that were intersperced with purple lobelia to provide an attractive low edging. My alysium is not like this. It is at least a foot high, sparsly flowering, spreading way too much and it's not a nice white. I keep planting it because I love the smell and remember the tidy edging it used to be....what's wrong?
