leaving garlic and shallots in the ground?

Hi!

It is my first time growing garlic and shallots. I harvested half of my garlic and it is hanging in the garage. I thought about leaving rest of the garlic in the ground for now because it is sunny and dry wheather and may be in the dry ground they will keep better than in the garage and now i am using those in the garage and before rainy wheather starts i will dig out the rest. Is it a good idea or should I dig them out immediately?

The same story with the shallots- i am just digging them out as needed.

yes you can leave your garlic and shallots in the ground, even grow them as perennial clumps if you want.

You certainly CAN but you should not do so if you want to have decently sized garlic to eat. If you are only interested in decorative use, then no problem. Garlic heads will just keep getting smaller and smaller and cloves will be so small as to not be worth the effort required for peeling.

Garlic stores best out of the soil somewhere you have control over fluxuations in temperature and humidity.
