Overwintering Fava beans in Seattle

plantslayer

Hello,

I bought some eating quality fava beans (not the cover crop kind) to grow as a winter crop in my north Seattle garden. Has anyone ever overwintered these? Are there any tips I need to know about in order to have them live through the winter?

I grew some cover crop favas a couple of years ago, but I must have done it too late, because they froze to death in the winter. The two varieties I bought this time were "Windsor" and "Long Pod". I was annoyed to read in Steve Solomon's book that Windsors are "not winter hardy this far north" (he was in Williamette OR when he wrote that). Should I take those Windsors back and get something else, or just go for it?

Thanks!
