Hawthorn with early leaf drop- what to do

We just moved into a house we bought in August with a number of mature trees in the backyard. One that appears to be a hawthorn has dropped all it's leaves except some at the the very top of the canopy, maybe 35' high. The birds love the berries but I am wondering why it lost most of its leaves so early- they turned brown and dropped, looking like early fall. They are the only leaves to have dropped so far. We live in the PNW so most deciduous trees are just starting to turn, most are still green and have most of their leaves. It was suggested on the tree forum that this is caused by a fungus similar to blackspot that hawthorns are prone to. I don't want to spray fungicides. If I prune it back will that help? Any suggestions welcome. I do enjoy the birds, but tre tree looks dead after August.
