Might work better to have a hardy evergreen vine, such as winter creeper for foliage inter-planted with a hardy deciduous vine, such as clematis, honeysuckle or rose for flowers.

Visit UBC Botanical Garden for ideas, in addition to other plantings with climbers there is an actual demonstration vine arbor there, near the fruit and vegetable plots.

I purchased a Holboellia coriacea (Cathedral Gem) this summer and we'll see how it does. It sounds like the perfect evergreen vine: hardy to Zone 6, likes a shady and well-drained site. White, fragrant flowers. I'd love to know if anyone else has already tried it.

Daphne - thanks for bringing that plant to my attention. I'd not come across it so looked it up. Some people might find the link of interest. I notice that the advice in the UK is that they need sun to flower, rather than shade, and might need winter protection.
