Any cole crop can be started now. Brussels sprouts may or may not have enough to to mature before frost, so look for a short-season cultivar (around 70 days - not easy to find at package stores, so check nurseries). After they mature, they actually develop a deeper flavor if they go through a frost cycle. Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, chard, kohlrabi, etc. will grow fine in cooler weather. If you want a head-start on your fall crops, I am donating about 20 flats of them to the Olympia Garden Club to sell for their Scholarship Fund on Oct 13. If there are any leftover, I will be bringing them to the Green Elephant Trade in November - well, actually, I'll probably be sending them through a proxy, since I will be out of town at the time. If you can't wait that long for starts, try a local Farmer's Market, because it's hard to find a nursery that carries them. Also good to plant right now are fall bulbs (which actually bloom in the spring, and are sometimes called spring bulbs), perennials, shrubs and trees. Some annual seeds can be planted now to overwinter now for a headstart next spring. You can also plant radishes and carrots to harvest in about 30 days, if the weather cooperates - or just harvest them as baby vegetables. Lettuce and spinach are also good cool-weather crops and, depending on your local zone, can be grown well into winter in the PNW with a row cover or in a hoophouse.
