Seeking Another Plant ID

I bought this annual vine in a 4" pot last Spring. The ID tag has gone missing, but I'm pretty sure the plant originated at Langley Gardens. It looks very similar to Asarina, but had an entirely different name. Can you ID it?

It grew slowly thru the Summer & had very few blooms until late Aug. Eventually, it really kicked in & has grown to a good-sized & robust vine with lots of buds...usually 7-8 blooms are open at one time. I hope to gather some seeds, but can't say I've seen any promising seed pods.

It doesn't climb well on it's own - seems to need a little help getting into contact with something to climb on. It has no tendrils or suction cups, but climbs by wrapping the leaf stems around the support. Mine has worked its way about 4' up a tripod of thin bamboo and has multiple side branches (branched quite freely).

I have the same plant, called Asarina purpusii. Mine is Victoria Falls which doesn't climb up, it hangs down. I understand there is another version that climbs. Mine didn't do much either until the last month or so. I've overwintered it in the greenhouse for 2 winters now. I keep the G/H barely above freezing.

Hi Patrick! How are your brugmansia, lots in bloom?

Are you sure that isn't an Asarina? Take a look at some of these pics of Asarina x wislizensis 'Red Dragon'; perhaps not this exact cultivar, but surely an Asarina?

Tom & Dotty...it seems we have overlapping names for this vine. Supposedly, the proper name is Lophospermum erubescens but may also be known as Asarina erubescens (which is how my other vine is ID'd). To add to the confusion, Lophospermum are also called Lofos and a common name is Creeping Gloxinia...whereas I've seen Asarinas commonly calling Snapdragon Vine or Vining/Climbing Snapdragon!

I don't think I'm going to find ripe seed pods on my Lofos (or whatever name we want to call it!) and according to the linked story, the leaves fall off at about 41 F. Guess I'd better be deciding about what I'll do to store it for the Winter...maybe cut it back, pot it up & keep it indoors, or at the very least, stick it in my garage.

Thanks for the input...reading various links led me to the name trailing gloxinia & when I searched that name, I found this article. When I saw the reference to Lofos/Lophospermum, I remembered that was the name on the plant tag.

Does yours want to climb? Mine won't, it hangs like a waterfall, which is a nice trait for a plant to have.

Mine will climb if it comes in contact with something suitable for support, but it usually needs a little help getting there! Left on its own, it just sorta sticks out any which way & eventually hangs downward if it doesn't happen to climb. But it is NOT a graceful trailer.

I have an Asarina erubescens that does trail gracefully, but has no interest in climbing at all.
