So is yerba buena not fragrant then? every field guide, botanical key, and knowledgeable friend says that yerba buena has fragrant foliage, but this plant never does.

Yes, it's subtle on plants I encounter here. I keep looking for that more noticeable fragrance you read about, not finding it. Maybe it's a hot climate thing.

Garden centers who order it have been supplied with 4" pot sizes by grower(s) here in recent years. So you might sometime be able to compare these with the wild plants you are looking at.

Here on Camano Island it grows with salal. Have also seen it on Vashon Island, again with salal.

I picked one on the Camano property and smelled it, there was definitely an aroma. Maybe cold weather brings it out more.
