Crows eat strange things ...

I was at the Olympia farmer's market recently and there were some crows foraging in the parking strips along the fence with the Port property. They were digging in the bark mulch and coming up with something. One was facing me as I parked, and you know how birds necessarily eat with their mouths open so I could see what was in its bill - something fleshy and white, kinda like a mushroom. Now what kind of mushroom would crows be eating??

so I went and poked around in the mulch where they were digging and I came up with - fly amanita mushroom, the bright red with white spots hallucinogenic mushroom. They were very calmly and methodically digging up and eating the fly amanitas as they were emerging from the bark!

You have to wonder - are they not affected by the hallucinogens? or are they deliberately seeking them out? they seemed totally calm and ordinary, not like robins getting drunk on pyracanthas.
