Winter Protection

With winter fast approaching what do have to protect in your garden?. I'm referring to the marginal species that you zone pushers like to grow. Here where I live in the Southern Gulf Islands we are still frost free to date, but I am ahead of the game and have protected special plants and some of my potted plants. I throw Maple leaves around my 1 gallon plants. Most of the plants in my garden are on their own and it's survival of the fittest. However I do like to stuff the inner crown of my Dicksonia antarctica with Burlap also hang loose burlap from the trunk. I'm praying for a mild winter because last Dec. 2008 wasn't fun. Low temps. down to -6.6 C. and the extended freeze wasn't the best thing for the more tender exotics. Cheers, Joe
