Grass alternative

With all this warm wet weather and now cold, my front yard is looking rough. I have the worst conditions there for a grass lawn. Trees, clay, and I hate to water. I was looking into some grass alternatives such as Mondo grass. Does anybody have any experience with it in the Dayton,OH area? I was thinking of replacing the worst areas (along the sidewalk) with it. Any suggestions you have would be welcome.

have you considered buffalo grass?

RE: Grass alternative

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have looked into it. I think it requires a sunny spot. The areas I have in mind are tree shaded (which is why turf grass does not grow well). So, I was looking into grass substitutes or ground covers. I love the way some of the alternative no mow lawns look, a little like an ocean of grass. However, because of the lack of sunlight, Mondo was the only thing I thought might grow well there.
