Mulch savings

I'm needing to get gobs of mulch, and the prices I paid for my first five bags have me questioning my own sanity.

I know I'm going to need, at the very least, a couple-hundred cubic feet. At $17 for 10 cubic feet... I just can't afford that.

Any advice? I am in Columbus, Ohio, and have just a Monte Carlo - nice trunk, but no pick-up. Either I have to get bags or delivery.

I live in Columbus also and I get my mulch from Kurtz Brothers on Rohr Road (near Groveport). They also have a location in Westerville. I get the red dyed kind and I pay about $30.00 a cubic yard (one bobcat bucket). I normally get 2 cubic yards per year to spruce up my beds. I do pick mine up, so I don't know how much they charge for delivery, with the price of fuel I'm sure it is high. Their number is 491-0868 and the Westerville number is 882-0200. Good luck.

Might you be able to get some tree trimmers to bring you a (free here) load of trimmings? I often use them, and then just topdress them with something a little darker, like composted (to a degree) bark mulch from the sawmill. They deliver also, and possibly there would be someone in your area.

Ohio Mulch has several locations around Columbus. They are having a bulk mulch sale, and delivery is 50% off ($30), for a short time. Check the Sunday Columbus Dispatch garden section for their ad. Good luck!
