my driveway was blacktopped on loose dirt about 7 years ago. i noticed lately there are pull cracks in part of it.

the part with pull cracks is on a hill where the loose dirt was pilled up to make the drive level. the loose dirt is slowly sliding down the hill along with the driveway. what would be the best tree with a large root system to hold this in place but wouldnt uproot the driveway? i live in zone 6 and this location will be full sun and the loose dirt is good top soil. thanks for any replies

Maybe this isn't quite what you wanted...especially now, but I'm curious....have you patched and resealed all the cracks each year? My neighbors and I live on steep hills, and we have asphalt drives which were put in at the same time.

Every year, my husband and I fill any cracks, and reseal the drive. Our neighbors on one side do nothing. They now have a 6" gap where the heave from the frost/freeze-thaw cycles have aided. Ours is fine....just an observation.

Currently, I have a dogwood which is planted about 1 1/2 feet from the drive...it was a self sow which I allowed to stay. There's no damage, and this is a tree which is about 4" in diameter and about 10 - 15 feet high. Dogwoods have a fairly shallow root system and I think it is more fiberous than most.
