Louisville, KY tree blooming right now, what is it?

We have a large tree blooming right now all over Louisville, and I'm sure other Ohio Valley areas. It has fragrant light purple flowers and sparse leaves right now, this week... I just noticed them again this year... they are sweetly fragrant, almost like the scent of grape vines when the grapes are ready.... Anyone know what this tree is called? Is it only wild? Or can I get one somewhere?
Or should I not (if they are troublesome invaders???)?
Thanks for help.
Sharon

Hi Sharon,
Gee, I wish I could help, but I can't think of anything.
I am in Louisville right on the city/county line.

You don't mean lilac? It's not what I would call a large tree- there's redbud too that have finished blooming, but I don't know that they have a fragrance. There is a tulip tree (in addition to the Tulip Poplar which I do have) but it finished blooming about Easter- and there's magnolia - one called Jane something has purplish/pink flowers...

sure hope someone will 'hop on' here and let us know-
I love trees!

good luck!

I think perhaps you could have a catalpa tree. They're also called cigar trees due to the seed pods later on in the year. You can start one from seed if you desire. You don't see them offered for sale too much. People don't like to clean up the seed pods. They do grow to be large trees and provide good shade.

Sharon
Where the blooms like a Wisteria bloom where the blooms going up instead of down?
Hope that makes sense
About a couple weeks ago I saw these trees traveling a long I-75 from Knoxville after entering into Ky I only saw a couple. Then last weekend I was in Louisville and saw one.
I too love to know the name

Thanks
