When to put in Pansies in window boxes for fall blooms in Ohio?

Hi!

I'm new here and have already learned a lot by lurking. I always do summer annuals (petunias, nasurtiums, marigolds, impatiens, coleus) in window boxes. This year I would like to extend the blooming period by putting in some Pansies when I yank out the summer flowers in the fall.

Anyone have any information on what is the blooming period for pansies in containers in Central Ohio? I usually don't yank my summer annuals until end of September at the earliest -- is this to late to put in pansies? Can anyone tell me about how long I can expect pansies to bloom for me (15 years of gardening and never done pansies!)

Also, I start most of my summer annuals indoors from seed and am planning to start the pansies from seed too. When should I start them? Stokes catalog says they will bloom about 10 wks from seeding, so I'm thinking of starting them June 15th. Really I have no idea what to expect!

Any information greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Lisa

Lisa, I have no idea so my post is pretty worthless. But...there are some experts on balcony or patio gardening that really know their stuff. That's where I would start.

Lisa, Pansies won't be out for sale until early September. It is best to wait until mid or late Sept. to plant them in that the heat in Sept. will often cause them to grow quickly and become "leggy." I've placed them in the ground, in window boxes and in pots outisde. Generally, they will bloom until early Dec. Sometimes a bit later if it remains mild... I've actually had them overwinter in pots and they start reblooming in March... Good luck...
