If you have REAL dirt then that land must have been well taken care of, most of us have 3" of topsoil and 3' of clay!

If the UNK bulbs were there when you got the place and doing well this Spring then no special over-wintering is necessary.
We ALL had a pretty cold, but snow covered, Winter so if they survived that you don't have much to worry about.

The term over-winter refers to the care of plants not Winter hardy to your zone.
That care can range from heavily mulching, wrapping, bringing the plant into a protected area, pulling bulbs and tubers.... basically a ton of different methods to get it thru the Winter into next Spring.

Each plant has a special way it likes to spend the Winter and each gardener, it seems, their own 'BEST' method.

My advice is to go to nurseries and visit gardens in your area.
Ask questions and take notes.

Any established nursery or 'REAL' garden store will be more than happy to help you.
A happy customer will return to buy more plants!

Welcome to zone 6! Another suggestion is to see if any of your neighbors are into gardening. They may be able to give you on-site advice.

Ok, I just read where Ohio has clay? I live in Dayton and just built a new home and I can't dig through the dirt, is this why? I have sod in the front and nothing in the back but medium rocks (5" and smaller)and the "clay" I was thinking about seeding it with "Trophy tall turf fescue" but dont know where to start? Rock hound, top soil, lime? HELP!! Sod is going to cost 2600.00 (ouch!)

well, if the ground is hard clay you are going to need to ammend the soil and rototill it in.

as far as gardening in zone 6.i recomend looking at online catalogues that list the zone hardyness of plants.you can browse through to get ideas of what you like from the pictures that will grow here and come back next year and make a list to take with you to the garden center.
