Date Palm Question

Posted by christiw Ohio, Zone 6 (My Page) on

I have some seeds for these and I can't find much information online. Looks like they aren't hardy here. Do they reseed? Do they get really tall? Is it something I could bring in in the winter?

Thanks for any info. you can provide!

RE: Date Palm Question

There's lots of information online. The Latin name is Phoenix dactylifera. It grows 40-75 feet tall and is a native of northern Africa, hardy in zones 9 - 11, but I guess it can be grown in zone 8 with protection.

Frankly, I think you'd be better off with a fig which isn't hardy here either 100% but it can be done....and is much more managable in size.

There's nothing to say you can't try it though.

RE: Date Palm Question

Date palms aren't something you'd want to have to bother bringing in every fall and taking out each spring--they have horrific spines at the bases of their fronds and hurt like hell if you are punctured.

Plus, date palms really need heat across a LONG summer for progressive growth.

Here is a link that might be useful: Cultural info on the true Date Palm

Okay, thanks for the info. I think I'll pass on trying to plant these seeds.
