Is it too late to start planting a garden?

I am new to gardening and just moved into a new duplex where I can plant a fairly large garden. My neighbors told me that they would let me use part of their garden this year to plant some vegetables. I was wondering if it is too late to start planting, and what would be some good things to plant this late in the year. I know that I want to plant tomatoes, but other than that I don't know what would grow well this late in the year. Also any help on varities of tomatoes would be great as well. We eat a lot of potatoes, tomatoes, green peppers, squash, zuccini (sp?), and watermelon. I would like to plant some sunflowers for my kids and some pumpkins for fall. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
