Help with my hostas!

| Early this spring I my mom spilt a bunch of hostas for the beginning of my shade garden. They are growing well and I love them, but I'm having some problems... First, something is eating them. There are tiny holes all over the leaves. (Whatever is eating the hostas is also eating the leaves of my glads very badly!) My mom said it's probably slugs and I should put beer out, so I'm trying that. Then, this weekend I noticed two of them are budding out and the stems have white mildew type stuff just below the buds. I'm guessing this is powerdy mildew. I've heard of that, but what do I do for it? Will it hurt my hostas? What should I do for them? |

| ignore the mildew...and I seriously doubt it is powdery mildew as I have never seen Hosta affected by that. I would suspect that the mildew is actually another bug. Go and press it and see if it trys to jump away from you. These bugs are annoying, but they don't really harm them significantly. As you have noted, hostas are slug food. The beer works well, there's also slug bait (but don't use it if you have critters who might eat it). Some people swear by crushed egg shells around the base of the plants, or diatomaceous earth or copper strips. I've used the eggshell, and it might work....frankly, I just ignore the slug holes. Your plants will get bigger and you won't even notice them after a while. |
