Of all the stupid things I've ever done...

This weekend I harvested some garlic from the herb bed. The tops were dying back and I dug up the 15 or 20 bulbs (they are called bulbs aren't they?) and layed them on the lawn to dry. They were small but larger than any I had ever grown before (haven't had a lot of luck with garlic) so I was excited and couldn't wait to make my first garlic braid. I went to the vegetable garden on the other side of the property to tie up the tomatoes and give them a side dressing of 10-10-10. The lady that mows our lawn came while I was tangled up in string and tomato vines. I finished with the tomatoes and ran the tiller over an area to put in another round of green beans where the lettuce had been. Afterwards I took the tiller back and noticed a very strong garlic smell in the area near the herb bed. Sure enough my babies that had been drying in the sun were now spread out over much of the back yard via the riding lawn mower. Fortunately there were a few bulbs left in tact but the garlic braid I had invisioned would have to wait till next year.

So sorry to hear of your loss - I would love to braid some garlic too. Thanks for the reminder - I need to tie up my toms as well. Well crud. I don't know what to say, but I would imagine your lawn is smelling yummy. I planted garlic a while back, but forgot where I planted it.

Isn't there some special ritual like you're supposed to plant garlic by a full moon or something?

I'm a newbie at growing garlic. There's a garlic farm called "Bubba Mike's". Really! They evidently started a cottage industry in Mid-Ohio and are doing quite well. Restuarants, specialty deli's and grocery stores. I planted one of their bulbs, it was hard to give it up but I have 9 plants growing. I wish I had planted more. Who knew??? The name really tickled me so I found them on-line and of course I can't find them now. There's more to garlic than meets the nose!! I'm really enjoying this forum. Thanks to all for the helpful hints. P.S. I pout all the way in to work when I have to quit playing in the dirt.

Sorry, It's not Bubba, it's Bobba-Mike's Garlic Farm. It's located close to Orrville in Wayne County. Yum gc
