 o
new plant suggestions?

Hi
I am wondering what you all grow that does well in our wet-in-winter, dry-in-summer clay soil -- something a little different, other than the extremely common echineas, black-eyed susan, daylilies...is anyone else sick to death of stella d'oros?

I am slowly improving the garden beds, elevating them & adding organic material, but in winter they are still pretty damp (where, after a heavy rain, the rest of the yard is an inch deep; I've heard that the neighborhood was once a wetland). One bed is very elevated now & is much less damp.
I've finally gotten some scabiosa and moonbeam coreopsis established after 3 tries. I have some pacific giant delphiniums that I put out this year, but just read on another forum that they won't do well in our summer.

I would love to hear some of your sucesses, esp. plants that aren't in every other yard!

Yes, I'm sick of Stella's and actually only keep a couple out in the field. There are tons of other colors in daylilies other than Stella. You might consider the daylilies Red Volunteer, Noble Lord, Autumn Wood and many other nice "not yellow" colors.

You should also be able to handle false indigo, peonies, Joe-Pye weed, cardinal flowers and monarda.

Your growing conditions sound exactly like mine! I'm just building my garden and its been rough. Wish I could find a good inexpensive source for the soil amendments I need....and help to dig it in! However, my daylilies have done well and so have the clematis I've planted. The mophead hydrangeas are doing fine, but one oak leaf is looking sad and there is some bizarre fungus or something on two of the three Annabelles I planted. The Stellas around here did put on a good show and people seem to love them, but they've just never done it for me either.
