| I have a block of this, probably Silver King, I love the stuff, not only for it's fine silver color but also it's great uses as a dried flower. My question is, I planted it in a place that is apparently way to fertile for it and it grows up and flops like some addled spider. Does anyone out there ever cut the stuff back for regrowth? If you do does it compromise the hardiness of the plant? This same question also applies to gooseneck loosestrife.

| Janet, I view most artemisias as hardy as johnson grass. I have limelight, and give it a hair cut every so often, and it just comes back fuller and even prettier. The dogs nested in it too after it was first planted, and they just made it spread into a much bigger patch. I say go for it. As rampant as gooseneck is, I doubt if anything would hurt it either. | I have read on other posts that you can preemptively strike artemisia with the shears, too. Supposedly if you cut it back a few times as it's shooting up, it will top out at a smaller size but be less prone to flopping. I'm going to try that next year because I don't really like the "stubs" that are left when you hack at it after it's gotten to 3-4ft tall. |
