Purple shrub at Cedar Point

I am from Hubbard Ohio but have been living in TN for 20 years. On my yearly visit to see Mom we planned a trip to Cedar Point.

We had a wonderful time. Mother was even impressed. She is a 75 year old "Ohioan" and has never been to CP.

Anyway, at the entrance to a ride that is named Demon______ is a low growing shrub that had purple leaves. No one knew its name.

Can anyone help?

Hey, I lived in Hubbard for a few years when I was a newlywed waaay back. Cedar Point is fun! Can you give us more details on the shrub? Name that plant is a fun game!

there is a new Weigela out called "Midnight Wine" that get's only 18" tall and wide maybe that's what the shrub is

Actually it looked like a smoke tree. Round purple leaves but it was low to the ground.

Probably one of the purple/red leafed barberry selections?

Could it have been 'Diablo' Eastern Ninebark? This one is showing up for sale in lots of places. New plants could appear low growing, but after establishment this one would shoot up to 8-12ft tall and equally as wide if let be.
