Cincinnati City Gardens

What are the big, shrubby plants I am seeing around, especially at the east end of Liberty St & at the entrance ramps to 71/Gilbert Ave. from Broadway? They're about 4-5 feet tall, big star-shaped leaves, and now, red, spiky blooms. I MUST HAVE ONE!

Sounds like Ricinus communis, castor bean.

I've seen those everywhere too. Personally, I think they are hideous. Nice to put a name to it, though.

I've collected a bunch of seeds from the "Carmencita" variety, from a garden in the neighborhood. I don't have enough room in my garden at work -- where I have plenty of space for these big dramatic dudes!

(I'm sure you know, but I always have to mention, Maggirat; castor bean is very toxic, plants and seeds, so you don't want to put it where little kids or compulsive animals might get at it.)

Still, I really like the way it looks, and the way it fills out a corner, so I'm looking forward to it next spring!
