Storm Damage

So how did everyone come through Ike? Lots of damage or were you lucky?

We got lots of leaves and branches from neighbors, but the yard came through pretty well. I was scared for my 20 year old Bloodgood Japanese Maple. It came through ok, loosing only the dead branches damaged by cicadias a couple of years ago.

My folks lost a big Aristocrat Pear (what a surprise!). We are in the process of cutting and carting it off now. I feel for those who lost multiple trees.

Dayton still has big areas without power almost a week after the storm. They say some areas may be 4 weeks or better! Makes you think twice about the convienence of utilities right at our fingertips on a daily basis.

So how is everyone else!?

RE: Storm Damage

I can't complain. I am 4 miles east of Xenia in New Jasper Twp. I was without power for less than 24 hours while friends in Xenia were without until Thursday night. Several co-workers are still without. I have some shingles missing and some branches down, nothing major. The dry weather had already taken a toll on the garden so no big losses there. The southerly wind direction minimized the damage as my house & garage face west. All in all I count myself lucky. My father keeps telling me I need to move to Florida but after Sunday I have one more reason to say "no thanks".

RE: Storm Damage

I lost power for almost a week, but that was actually not so bad.

Some of my top heavy vines had problems; a tall, narrow trellis tied to a brinck pillar snapped in half, and I lost half the akebia that had clustered at the top. The heavy blanket of the autumn clematis that grows over the back fence blew over, but I simply heaved it back over the fence and it's doing fine.

We did lose what seemed like hundreds of unripe peaches on one of the trees at work, but they didn't seem to be ripening anyway. and the tree looks much happier now!

No big tree damage at my apartment, my parents house, or the garden at work -- I'd say I was pretty lucky.
