Pruning (trimming) a Japanese Maple

| I just bought a home this spring and with the purchase I inherited a lovely yet wildly overgrown Japanese maple. I figured I would wait until the leaves are off before I start cutting, but when trying to plan my cuts...I just get lost! This thing is huge! It needs to be trimmed by 4-5 feet in some spots (covering a walk), and its about 3 feet taller than our roofline. So, my question is where do I begin? I've pruned (professionally) in the past, but I'm to scared to tackle this one. Any guidelines I should follow? I can post some pigs if it helps. Thanks! |

| I think good responses will be dependent upon some good pictures - otherwise they will be guessing/assuming Marshall |
