First Garden...

Hello, everyone!
My name is Becky. I am VERY new to gardening. Due to illness I am now disabled and cannot work. My sister, who is the best gardener I know - and also has the same condition I do (it genetic) - suggests that I try my hand at it as an outlet. (Before I was forced to go on disability I was a workaholic and made little time for anything else - especially gardening)
Anyway, I have a few houseplants that I am still "getting to know" but will be buying my first home in the next year or so and I am curious about where to start outdoors...I don't want to bite off more than I can chew, but when I go to a nursery or even to Lowe's or Wal-Mart I fall in love with almost everything I see. I am fascinated by the variety of plants.
Any suggestions of where to start for a first time gardener? I seem to really be drawn to an exotic almost tropical look....which scares me because of our climate..
Hoping to get to know you all better in the future, I have really enjoyed reading your threads so far!

Becky

I posted this to the Gallery by mistake (though I welcome your input anyway), I will repost to the Discussion Forum.
