How do you start your seeds indoors?

I've started herbs, peas, and broccoli indoors in a sunny window, but that was last summer when I was just "playing" and learning. I'm ready to get serious now and I don't have enough windows for all the seeds I want to start.

I have a sturdy (and attractive) metal 4 shelf unit. I've seen expensive set-ups that look similar, but they are specifically made for growing plants and have lights attached to them. I'm sure I can rig up something similar with this shelving unit, but I'm uncertain on what types of lights to buy---and when to start the seeds.

I've purchased all sorts of seeds--the stores just got them in. A few things I want to try, I can't find and will have to order online, I guess.

Anyway...

Do you start seeds indoors? What types of lights do you use and when do you start them?
