Huge Snowflakes; Don't Head West!

Posted by susanlynne48 OKC7a (My Page) on

These are the biggest snowflakes I've seen! Right now they are melting fast, but temp is supposed to drop quickly, so it will be affecting roadways here in Metro. I-40 around El Reno is freezing up now, and they are advising that people don't head out that way.

Jeepers! They are super-sized, aren't they?

Mutant snowflakes!

Bigger than anything I saw in 15 years of snow in Colorado. And it's coming down fast, too.

Within the last few minutes, it has started to stick to the roadways, trees, sidewalks, driveways. But it is still very wet snow, which is what we usually get in February. There have been 4 accidents at the I-35 North/Guthrie exit, and things are really beginning to decline now.

Sure is beautiful, though!

Where are you located, Spademillane? Trying to get an idea of everyone's location.

It just looks awesome. I did a quick grocery store run, as I was in Dallas over the weekend and needed some food stuff. It was raining when I left, and looked like this when I got back

Photobucket

and the snow layer is way bigger already now, just 15 minutes later. I may have to make a snow man. LOL

Some people have all the luck. : ) I bet those big snowflakes look lovely.

All we have here is thunder, rain and mud. The 'puddle' between the back porch steps and the driveway is about 20' in diameter and over an inch deep. It is a rainboot sort of day here. All but one pond is overflowing, and the overflow basins that catch the overflow are full too. That means the remaining rainfall will just run off into the creeks and then down to the Red River.

Moni, what a beautiful shot of the house, yard and snow.

Y'all stay safe and warm.....and from what Susan says, it sounds like a good day to stay off the roads if you can.

Big snowflakes falling here in the Tulsa area. It's hovering around 34 degrees, so nothing is sticking yet. I'm tucked in with my little doggies sleeping on top of me--wherever they can find a free spot. Makes for interesting typing!

Snow here, too! I'm stuck with a sleeping baby on my lap and I dare not move to look out the door but the kids said it's "like a blizzard". These kids are so snow-deprived, anything more than two flakes is "like a blizzard". I can't wait to check it out myself!

I'm getting jealous. No snow here, and the rain has moved on east/northeast. Now we're just sitting ducks here, waiting for the really cold air to swoop down.

Well, the cold is here now. My wind chimes are loud, which means plenty of north wind for me. :)

The snow just didn't last at all. No snow man.

Oh well, snow men are overrated.

I don't know how much snow any of us will see on Thursday, but they're forecasting possible snow or sleet way down south in Texas....possibly as far south as Austin.

I'm glad we don't have all the snow on the ground that folks in the Mid-Atlantic states have right now and with more headed their way.

After the Thursday/Friday front passes, I think we're good for a couple of days and then snow is back in the forecast for Monday. Of course, Monday is a week away and the forecast could change before then.

March is only three weeks away, but it doesn't seem like the weather is acting more March-like, except for the wind.

Wow, all we got yesterday was the huge snowflakes here but nothing stuck, so it's all icy this morning!

Sorry so late in the thread, I was stuck at work!!!

The snow was gone almost as quickly, if not quicker, than it arrived. Out of all of that precip we only got .20" of moisture. Seemed like it shoulda been more.

Most folks in Texas, Dawn, would not consider Austin as "way down south in Texas" LOL! Reminds me of a funny story when I worked in Dallas. A guy in our Massachusetts office sent a package to us, but it was diverted to Houston instead of Dallas for some reason. Now, most places in Mass are within an hour or so's drive, including Vermont, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. He could not understand why we just couldn't get in the car and drive to Houston to pick up the package! So funny! Had no concept of how big Texas is.

.....awaiting Thursday's storm now.

Susan, That's true. When I lived in Texas, we thought of "south Texas" as Brownsville, San Antonio, etc. For snow purposes, though, it is pretty far south and that's the context in which I was using it. When I livedin Fort Worth, Austin seemed like it was just a hop, skip and a jump away. Now it seems so very far away. LOL

Actually I only listed Austin because snow seems more likely there than in other Texas locations that also have 'a slim chance' of freezing precip, including Houston, Corpus Christi, etc. I haven't looked at models of the projected pathway across Texas today to see if the track is the same as projected yesterday.

The Thursday storm will track low (if the models are right) through Texas and the southern half of OK so some places in Texas may see more snow with this storm than places in northern OK. There's even a slim chance of precip for New Orleans, other cities along the Gulf coast and maybe even northern Florida with this Thursday storm.

We have sunshine here this morning so snow seems far away but we might see it on Thursday.

I haven't even looked at the longer-term projections to see what kind of weather pattern might bring us snow next Monday. I'm not sure I want to know.

As a brief aside, I spoke with DS a few minutes ago and he encountered very icy freeways in Grapevine on his way to work at D-FW Airport. He thinks the freeway icing near the airort was from yesterday's rain that froze as temps dropped last night, but said there are multiple slick roads in one particular part of Dallas that may have had late freezing rain or something else because they are much worse than the rest of the area.

Can we just skip the rest of February and go straight to March and, hopefully, better weather.

Yay, glad this was a non-event! Time to get the Tomato seedlings going. Got the trays sterilized, got to fill the peat pots.

Susan, my Bird of Paradise seeds are germinating! And the Pride of Barbados seeds are germinating. I've got Hello Yellow Asclepias, Viridis, and White Incarnata up and ready to transplant. It's starting all over!

LMAO Diane!

RE: Huge Snowflakes; Don't Head West!

Sandy, I started my tomato seeds today and I meant to do it Sunday but the whole Super Bowl food prep. and pregame etc. got in the way and I never got around to it. I'm still not completely through sowing tomato seed, but I got the first 60 varieties done, so I'm almost to the finish line. I had a very willing assistant (our two-year-old granddaughter) and together we moved at a snail's pace, but I'd rather be sowing seeds with her than without her.

Diane, We had sun all day but still had wind chills in the teens and twenties, so it didn't feel nearly as warm as it looked. Sunshine is always welcome though.

Moni, OK, tomorrow when we wake up let's pretend it is April 1st. And, if it is April 1st, I'm way behind on planting and stuff. I bet you're really looking forward to seeing that grandbaby!

Mandy, If we didn't have each other to talk to during these long cold winters, I think we'd all go nuts...

Dawn
