Tree, if they aren't more than 2 or at most 3" tall, I'd consider using a thin sharp knife to separate them and re-pot. But if you have a volunteer that you're not all that enthused about, in with a plant you REALLY want, then I'd recommend that you nip it off.

I regularly plant multiple pepper seeds together, as well as just about every other type of plant, and then separate them when I pot them up into larger containers. I just gingerly pull the two (or three) plants apart, trying to preserve as much of their root system and soil as possible. Immediately replant each in their own container. I always water them within minutes of transplanting. (Also, I make sure to water them a day or so before the separation/transplanting process.)

I use the "pull apart" method also. The potting soil I use to start my seeds is hard to cut because of small sticks and other material in it, and the pull apart method will let some of the roots pull from the neighboring plants area. If you a seed starting mix it may cut easier than what I use.

I start a lot of seeds in each cell and just pull them apart and pot them up after they are a couple of inches tall. The plants usually survive that just fine.

With the unknown tomato seedlings, I'd just pull them out of the roots of the desirable plant. You also could just clip them off at the soil level with scissors. For something like that I use tiny embroidery scissors so I don't cut the stalk of the desirable plant. I don't think pulling the tomato volunteers out of the soil would hurt either the pepper or the lion's tail plants. Based on having grown lion's tail many times, I'd say nothing hurts it.....it is really hard to kill.

Thanks everyone didn't know if peppers were tough like tomatoes after last springs pepper disaster.
I'll get right on that I got yogurt cups I can put them in.
